Gino's Best of 2007

It's that time again, folks: for our 'best of' lists of films we saw this year. Remember, you can use the pink tabs to just show your reviews, and the eligible movies are those you saw this year, not necessarily released this year. But be as subjective as you like, if you choose to do one at all. Unfortunately, when someone adds a review to one that's already in our database, the date gets changed to the newer one. Next year, I will try to remember to note the date of the older reviews too.
Well, 2007 is the year I saw "The Godfather, Part II", my favorite of the trilogy. But, I feel a little funny making it my #1, it being so old. So, I am going to leave it as a Honorable Mention (very honorable though it may be) and give you my top three, which are more contemporary. Links are to our reviews:
3. The Boss of It All, which was the office comedy from Lars von Trier that Twinkletoes and I saw at the Philly Film Festival this year. I think it is worth a rental from y'all.
2. City of God, which was Twinkletoes #1 from last year (it took me a while to see it). This was not really my kind of film, but it's execution was astounding, and it could have easily been #1.
1. And the winner is: Children of Men. This too was an unpleasant film, but technically brilliant and written with brave and admirable economy and uncompromising focus. In its honor, I have added extensively to it's review from some e-mails between Twinkletoes and me from back then.
I would like to give Honorable Mentions to The Godfather, Part II, three films I saw recently as part of our own film festival: Once, The Namesake, and Please Teach Me English, and a film which I think I saw last year, but you did this year: The Fog of War.
Happy New Year,
Gino
