★★★½ Ed Wood
[Gino: 3.5]Gino says: 'This 1994 Tim Burton film examines the career of "worst director of all time" and transvestite Edward Wood Jr. (of "Plan 9 from Outer Space" fame). It's an affectionate, almost quiet film, and I think they had fun making this, reveling in some of the lighting and special effects techniques of the era they were filming. Some call it Burton's "masterpiece", but I don't think I'd go that far.
Johnny Depp's performance is enjoyable, if sort of cartoonish. But Martin Landau's take on a down-and-out Bela Lugosi (for which he won an oscar) is mesmorizing and it's actually worth seeing the movie for that alone. '
