★★★★ A Streetcar Named Desire

[Gino: 4.0, Twoshoes: 3.5]

Gino says: 'This of course is the famous sequel to "A Telegraph Pole Named Confusion", an inferior work which has faded to obscurity. I kid. This is the 1951 Elia Kazan version of the Tennessee Williams play. I was worried that it would feel too, well, "staged" like a play. Instead, the film-makers made excellent use of a very nice set design, and the ensemble acting is quite naturalistic. [With the exception of Vivien Leigh, who I always felt like was stage "acting" amongst the others who were acting naturally. Though she did it well.] Brando is of course no less than mesmerizing, and the story for the most part keeps you interested. I should say that the version we saw was restored to the director's intention, adding 3 minutes of material of a sexual nature that supposedly makes the film a lot clearer than the version cut by the decency board at the time.'
