★★★ The Voyeurs
[Twinkletoes: 3.0]Twinkletoes says: 'I had a hard time connecting with this film. I think that has to do both with my unfamiliarity with Indian cinema and with Indian culture. Moments that seemed to represent something larger were lost on me. In the end it wasn't a total deal breaker. This story about a couple of friends who install computers and surveillance equipment for a living and who install a camera to spy on the beautiful woman who lives next door certainly wasn't too elusive to derive enjoyment from. And the film was filled with some very broad humor. However, clearly the makers were striving to make a point about the society they are living in and while not totally lost on me, I feel that message was a bit diluted. I also had some issues with the incredibly serious turn of events that the film took. Of note is the fact that this is not a "Bollywood" film and actually part of a movement in Indian cinema towards realism. This is what we were told by the curator of the Indian Cinema program. With that knowledge do not expect something along the lines of The Bicycle Thief. This film's tone (or at least most of it) is far removed from any sort of realist cinema movement that I have ever been familiar with.'
