★★★½ Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street

[Twinkletoes: 3.5, Tiny: 3.5]

Twinkletoes says: 'I have mixed feelings about this film. On the one hand Burton has brought his usual visual flair to a piece perfectly suited to it. The film looks and feels great. You also have great performances by everyone. Depp was his usual self but I feel like special mention needs to be made of the wonderful jobs done by Sacha Baron Cohen and Timothy Spall who plays the character of Beadle Bamford.

On the other hand this thing was really, really musical. Now I certainly knew it was based on a musical and I knew it was for all intents and purposes a "musical". Its just that I was expecting something more along the lines of Oliver and less The Umbrellas of Cherbourg. That is to say more dialogue, less singing.'

Tiny says: 'I was pretty familiar with the stage version, so I had no issues with the nearly constant singing. As usual I enjoyed Mr. Depp a lot, as well as the overall look of the film. Needlessly gruesome images at times, worthy of a slasher film. Musically, I'm not a gushing Sondheim fan but I think this dark story fits very well with his style. I didn't love Helena Bonham Carter's work here, though. I agree with Twinkletoes that Cohen and Spall were great; I liked Alan Rickman (Judge Turpin), too.'
