★★★ Idiocracy

[Twinkletoes: 3.0, Gino 3.0 (sp)]

Twinkletoes says: 'From the director of Office Space comes this story about a soldier who is mistakenly frozen for 500 years only to wake up to discover he's now the smartest man in the world. It's a great concept that they do a really great job of establishing, but after they came up with the idea I feel like they got a little lazy. Basically it's a one joke movie, albeit a very funny joke.'

Gino says: 'I agree that it is a one-joke movie, but I admired the great detail in which this moronic future was imagined and presented. Some bits were really very funny -- not so much whole scenes but details or images. But basically, it did feel like 'let's hire two B-list actors (Luke Wilson? and Maya Rudolf) and then 10 thousand ugly people and go with it.

This seems like the place to mention Mike Judge as a wonderfully cynical observer of our world. In addition to Office Space, he also did Beavis and Butthead and King of the Hill. The other day I was thinking that Hank Hill from that show is the best-realized "American" character I can think of. The guy is very decent and doesn't want to cause trouble but kinda wishes that everyone else would just act "normal" like him. Anyway, the characters in this movie are not like Hank Hill, more like Butthead.'
