★★★★ Little Miss Sunshine
[Gino: 3.5, TwoShoes: 4.0, Twinkletoes: 4.0, Tiny: 4.0]
Gino says: "This is a solid film with a great cast. (I love Alan Arkin). The kind of mix of tragedy and comedy that usually makes for the best type of film. My only complaint here, I guess is that it wasn't that funny or tragic, if you know what I mean. I.e. my hopes were really high for this film, and while I liked it, it didn't hit that high mark."
Twinkletoes says: "I am going to agree with Gino for the most part but I guess I found it a bit funnier than he did. The last 15 minutes at pageant had me laughing out loud and took a movie that was solid to another level."
Tiny says: "I think I found it more touching than Gino and while I thought it was really funny, I did not particularly love the pageant. I really enjoyed Uncle Frank and Dwayne's characters and relationship with each other. I liked some little touches, like showing that their vehicle passes an exit for "carefree highway," and the fact that Olive is passing time in by trying to put a smiley face puzzle together. Anyone notice astonishing similarities to National Lampoon's Vacation? I'll elaborate in the comments.

I know, it is a road trip movie, so it has a lot in common with many movies, but in both movies you have a family led by a father who is sort of hell bent on the idea that his dysfunctional family should be "winners." Both ride in embarrassing vehicles. Both wind up travelling with a dead relative. Both trips are primarily motivated by a desire to make one or more of the kids happy. The ultimately destination is a disappointment. An alternative ending of LMS, viewable on the DVD, had them stealing the trophy, which is not unlike the Griswolds forcing John Candy to let them ride the rids. Obviously, LMS is a darker film.
I can't wait for Little Miss Sunshine's European Vacation and Little Miss Sunshine's Chrstmas Vacation!
