★★½ The Jerk
[Gino: 2.5]
Actually, to be honest, most of what I have to say about this film is good: There are many moments where Steve Martin's verbal and physical comedy are great and pleasantly very weird. I can see why people liked (like) it so much. Must have been fantastic if you were in 11th grade in 1979. But I think my tolerence for comedies of this era has dropped a lot. It seems like these kinda Mel Brooks/Carl Reiner type things have both feet planted in Vaudville and old Marx Bros. comedies rather then future, say "something about mary" or "american pie" type comedies. Which is fine -- I like those as much as the next guy-- but they do in hindsight really feel like the end of a genre rather than the beginning of something daring. So to summarize it was good for what it was.

I haven't seen this movie in a long time, but I do remember finding it quite funny. Maybe I was a lot closer to 11th grade. I actually don't remember much. I remember that the beginning of the movie is pretty hilarious. I don't remember much else. Isn't it basically a Dumb and Dumber sort of thing, but better?
