★★★½ Heat
[Gino: 3.5]
This was a 2 hr 45 min film that actually felt longer -- and I think suffered from me having to split it up into 3 viewings. That said it was nice and complex cops and robbers story, and I would call it "sprawling", which matches well with the LA location. As I have heard critics say, no one does LA like Michael Mann. [ok, except for DeNiro's NYC accent, that was out of place, but hey.] Al Pacino's acting made me giggle a couple times -- how he suddenly decides to shout some words here and there. He is scarier (as the detective) than the bad guys in this film. I did not really get sucked into the side plots involving the criminal's family/romance relationships, but on the other hand these did give the film its flavour/style. I also enjoyed Mann's "Collateral" and more so "The Insider".
