★★★ Shopgirl

[Gino: 3.0, Twoshoes: 3.0, Twinkletoes: 2.5]

Twinkletoes says: "I'm having mixed feelings on this one. I am not a Claire Daines fan. Not sure what it is [about her that] annoys me slightly, but she was fine in this. But although [she was] the lead in the film, there really wasn't anything compelling about her character. I generally like Steve Martin, but I felt he was grossly miscast in this (I realize he wrote the thing). Nothing about him strikes me a dashing and sophisticated. I am a big Jason Schwartzman fan, and I thought he was great. The film had some laughs, but it didn't really grab me. I guess my problem is that I felt like Martin doesn't really have a decent grasp of writing a female character. The two males were really the only ones with anything to do while Claire sat there and looked distant and/or sad. As a side note, Bunny and I both found Martin's narration very annoying."

Gino says:"I disagree about Martin's miscasting, I found him believable. I neither love or hate these three people. Twoshoes generally likes Claire Danes and Steve Martin and really dislikes and is disgusted by Jason Schwartzman. So, I guess the moral of this story is that whether or not you like or dislike any of the main actors, this is approximately a 3-star film. I found it solidly and competantly made but not gripping. Narration is almost always annoying in a film. While bad here it was not pervasive."
