★★★½ The Last Shot

[Gino: 3.5]
Maybe I am being a little generous, but this was enjoyable. Why would I watch something with a DVD cover like this? Twoshoes and I were listening to This American Life one day. They had a true story of a bogus movie production set up by the FBI to catch mobsters. The directors of the film were not even told they were shooting a fake film. The screeplay took place in Arizona and they were shooting in Rhode Island. But along the way the assigned FBI agent starts getting swept along with the excitement of making a film. Anyway, we both thought "this story could make a great movie". So, when they actually did make a film about this, I needed to see it. But it looked so cheezy, I just watched it on the train. Turns out, it's pretty good. There aren't really many "laugh out loud" kinda moments. But on the other hand it's pretty much non-stop little funny (but not in-your-face) jokes. Alec Baldwin is funny in this type of role (as the FBI agent). Tony Shalhoub is funny too. Matthew Broderick (as the director) and Calista Flockhart are fine. Toni Collette (as the somewhat washedup hollywood star) is doing her best but felt mis-cast to me. Anyway, not something to make popcorn for, but you will enjoy it.
