★★★½ Joni's Promise
[Twinkletoes: 3.5]
Apparently in Indonesia, in an effort to turn a bigger profit, all of the movie theatres across the city stagger their show times of the same film and use a courier to move reels from one theatre to another so that multiple theatres can show the same copy of a film. This is a charming film about one young courier who takes great pride in the fact that his theatre has never missed a reel change. One day he meets a beautiful girl who tells him that he can only know her name if her film goes from start to finish without interruption. Unfortunately the courier is faced with the day from hell. Sure, it’s a bit of a corny story but it was well done with a lot of energy, naive enthusiasm, breezy humor and a great soundtrack. It wasn’t incredibly compelling cinema but it was certainly fun and entertaining.
