★★½ In a World...

[Tiny: 2.5]

Tiny says: 'This is a romantic comedy that aims maybe slightly higher than that, but ultimately was merely pleasant. The concept is great – a movie about the voices behind movie trailers, made more personal by creating a rivalry between an up-and-comer daughter and her iconic-voiced but sexist father. She craves her father's respect, but he has picked his own heir rather than his daughter. The father is unlikable, and for fun, I guess, they actually cast the real-life voice-over guy as the father. This was a disaster; he has a great voice but his acting would stand out in a bad way in a community theater. It probably doesn't help that his character is a little too simply drawn. There are some cute laughs, a sex farce, and a subplot involving the daughter's sister and her husband that felt like something from a Lifetime movie, although the payoff was solid. My wife liked it more than me, but noted that IN A WORLD seems like the kind of movie we would write and make ourselves. Probably, and I don't take that as complimentary to me or the movie.'
