★★★½ Chinatown

[Gino: 3.5 sp]

Gino says: 'This is Roman Polanski's 1974 detective story starring Jack Nicholson and Faye Dunaway, and was a re-visit for me, having seen it in a film class way back. Maybe not quite as snappy as some of its Film Noir predecessors, but it brings the genre out of the shadows and into the intense California sunshine, and has a more expansive scope: Not just a murder mystery, but a meditation on the corruption and politics of water in developing Los Angeles.'

... and I would like to add that my 3.5 is a little on the stingy side.
