★★ Grindhouse
[Twinkletoes: 2.0]Twinkletoes says: 'Where do I begin with this thing? As you probably know this is a double feature of 2 feature length films all rolled up into 1 and accompanied by trailers to fake movies. The whole thing is supposed to be done in the style of exploitation films from decades ago. The first film is Planet Terror directed by Robert Rodriguez, a director who's fame astounds me. Has this guy ever made a good film? Seriously, take a look at his credits. This thing is pretty much a cheesy zombie film from the 80's. I'm sure that was the vibe he was going for but that doesn't change the fact that its a cheesy zombie film. There's a reason that this type of stuff was relegated to straight to VHS. It sucks.
The 2nd film is directed by Quentin Tarantino and its called Death Proof. Its about a former stuntman who drives around in a "death proof" car and terrorizes women with it. The 1st half of this thing is unwatchable. "Clever" dialogue straight from the 1st draft of a Pulp Fiction ripoff and a story that goes nowhere made me want to turn this thing off. But after Kurt Russell gets behind the wheel of his car this thing actually becomes a bit of a guilty pleasure despite the fact that it never rises above the level of incredibly stupid. As for the extra stuff in this film its actually all very entertaining which leads me to believe that this whole project was a clever idea that should have never gotten this big of a treatment. Its sort of like that William Shatner album from a few years ago. The idea of him singing Common People is fun but do you really wnat a whole cd of that stuff? Anyway to break it down, Planet Terror would get a 0.5, Death Proof would get a 2.0 and the extra stuff would get a 3.5. Overall I give it a 2.0'
