★★★ Scenes From A Marriage

[Gino: 3.0]

Gino says: 'This 1973 Ingmar Bergman film about a couple's disintegrating marriage and life-long bond was originally released in a FIVE hour version on Swedish TV. It later got a three hour US theatrical release, and it is that version I am reviewing.

The film is basically like if you took a Woody Allen film like "Husbands and Wives", took all but the most dark humor out of it, essentially eliminated all but two characters, and then doubled its running time. If that sounds good to you, please rent this.

But I jest a bit, because I did not dislike it. It was quite an undertaking for the two main actors, and, if nothing else, it made me think about the complexity of human relationships and our generous capacity for analyzing those relationships, and for self-reflection. It also made me wish -- just a little bit -- that we had never evolved to have that capacity.'
