★★★½ Persepolis
[Gino: 4.0, Twinkletoes: 3.0] Gino says: 'This animated film follows the coming of age of a somewhat sulky Iranian girl in Iran and Europe with the backdrop of the Islamic Revolution and the Iran/Iraq war. I enjoyed the animation style itself, and the slight history lesson, and the charming "characters". '
Twinkletoes says: 'The animation style was interesting. But for me it didn't suit the story. It almost made the subject matter less weighty. And I had a major issue with this film being in French. An admirable but not totally successful film.'

I am curious about your "major issue" with this being in French. Hard to read French quickly while trying to take in the animation? Delayed anti-colonialism? Just dislike the French people?
I'm sorry but I didn't realize they spoke French in Iran. Here we have a serious film that aspires to being more than mere entertainment and the audience who this is meant for can't deal with actual native languages being spoken? Lame.
I could be totally wrong, but isn't this a French film? So, isn't that like saying any American films made about a serious subject taking place outside the US should be in the native language? And didn't the family whose story was depicted speak French (bilingually at least)? Again, I could be wrong -- it's been a while, and too lazy to research it.
This is not to say that I have any strong opinion about this -- you answered my initial question.
Yes, I am saying that "any American films made about a serious subject taking place outside the US should be in the native language." In The Godfather the scenes in Italy were in Italian. Did that bother you? As for them being bilingual. I have no idea. It sure seemed like they were but all they spoke was French so I can't be sure.
