★★★½ Son of Rambow
[Twinkletoes: 4.5, Gino: 3.0, Twoshoes: 3.0]
Twinkletoes says: 'When the 2008 Philadelphia Film Festival lineup was announced, this was the first one that I deemed a "must see" for me. And try as I might, I couldn't get anyone else to bite, which is a shame because this is a fantastic film. It is the story of 2 very different boys from very unique and troubling backgrounds who become close friends when they try to create a remake of the 1st Rambo film in order to enter an amateur film contest. Things go swimmingly until a French foreign exchange student gets involved. At times laugh out loud funny, at other times heartbreaking, this film is always very sweet. This is a true family film but one that will be of particular interest for those of us who grew up during the 1980's. And of particular interest to us is the character of Didier who is very reminiscent of a phase a person from our past went through.'
Gino says: 'Well, Twoshoes and I both liked this, but obviously not as much as Twinkletoes. I have noticed over the years that Twinkletoes really likes films about kids acting in their kid-worlds the way they do, guided by their kid-logic. These types of films, of course are good, especially when the kid world intersects the grown-up world but the perspectives are maintained. But I suspect his being disposed to like such films, plus the "festival bump" probably explains the difference between our ratings. I would not dissuade anyone from seeing this though! Also, now I am intrigued, because I don't know what real-life person Twinkletoes is referring to, regarding the character Didier!'
