★★½ The Painted Veil (2006)
[Tiny: 2.5]
Searching at the last minute for a movie with a convenient start time, we selected this one based on positive reviews and the presence of my favorite going actor, Edward Norton. While he and (the almost unrecognizable) Naomi Watts are perfect, and while the photography of China, the costumes, props (I love Norton's typewriter, for example), and even the soundtrack are outstanding, in the end we both found the melodramatic aspects of the story a bit mundane and predictable. Closer to a three than a 2.5, though. My nomination for an alternate title: "Not In Love In The Time Of Cholera."

you should have stayed to the end of the painted veil & you would have found that they did fall in love. they both changed. watts deserved more that she got out of the film. looks like she will have to scream 2 or 3 times to get the attention she got from 21g. from cronenberg's eastern promises (russian midwife exposes an inter-national sex ring in london) or haneke's funny games (2 thugs terrorize her & her family).
