★★★½ Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan
[Tiny: 3.5, Twinkletoes:3.5, Gino: 3.5]
Tiny says: Maybe this is really a 3.0 with slight grade inflation because we never go to the movies. Anyway, this movie was really funny. As a Jew, I have slight concerns that maybe 2% of the people watching don't "get" that he's making fun of anti-Semites. Like, I'm sitting in the theater and I hear people laughing at "The Running of the Jews," and, you know, it was a little unsettling, even though I'm pretty sure most people were laughing at the fictionalized Kazaks. Of course, maybe it is the people of Kazakhstan who should be most offended. Speaking of which, you should go to YouTube and check out Borat's version of the Kazakhstan national anthem.
Twinkletoes says: I'm not going to sit here and tell you this is a great film. It's basically a collection of skits loosely tied together. And not all of them even worked for me. What I will tell you is that the ones that did work provided me with some of the biggest laughs I've ever had and I still find myself a week later laughing out loud as I remember some of those scenes. I'm also going to give it a 3.5 but unlike Tiny, I think that may be a bit low. I really thought it was that funny.
Gino says: I guess we're all agreed then, that it is a 3.5 film. I would side with Tiny that it is a generous 3.0, but the effort that went into creating this character deserves some kind of award. And the multi-level satire that is going on is impressive. But if this had had a real story too, and if all the parts had hit there mark then it would have been great.
