★★★ Marie Antoinette

[Twinkletoes: 2.5, Gino: 3.5, Twoshes: 3.0]

Twinkletoes said:"Judging from the trailers for this film I was expecting a bold, bright and rocking telling of the story of Marie Antoinette. The actual film was far from that. Aside from a few scenes that used modern music and a couple of anachronisms that appeared on screen, this was a pretty traditional filmic telling of this story, and that disappointed me. Now if I was making this film, I would have chosen either to tell it in a straight forward period piece sort of way, or I would have gone all out and used anything and everything from wild editing techniques to great rock music to create something totally modern. In the end we were left with an odd sort of mix between the two and I must admit to being a little bored at times. I will say this, the film looked great, but I’m not sure if you could film the French countryside and Versailles and not have it look great."

Gino said:"I am not going to go out of my way to disagree with Twinkletoes here. What he says is true. I guess I enjoyed it more because with the benefit of the passage of time, I was not expecting either the intricate period piece or the post-modern music video, so was not disappointed at it's middle ground. In the end, I admired the very narrow focus of the thing, and the opulence. Though, I can see one getting bored: When I say narrow focus, I mean it. Most of the scenes are Marie Antionette lounging around and looking at shoes, and then there is like a 12-second clip of the king saying 'Ok, let's send troops to America,' then cut back to dresses. Long story short, if you are comfortable with this shallowness, I would recommend the movie."
