★★★ Smiles of a Summer Night
[Gino: 3.0]
[Watched in two parts on the train.] I gather from others' comments this is one of the lightest of Bergman's films. It reminded me, no doubt for good reason, of Woody Allen's A Midsummer Night's Sex Comedy. And that would have been a descriptive title of Bergman's film too. Of course, it lacks Allen's brand of humor and you're not going to be rolling in the aisles, but it is clearly a comedy. The best lines are the jabs the women in the film deliver to the men, who are all clueless. Some of the best of those jabs coming from probably the eldest cast member, Naima Wifstrand. I feel like I would have enjoyed this film more if it had not been a period piece but set in the modern day with modern day issues. I realize that changes a lot, but...
