★★★½ Broken Flowers
[Gino: 3.5, TwoShoes: 3.5]
This might be a good time to reiterate that while Twoshoes and I often give the same number of stars, we do not discuss it in advance. Secondly, I find that my reviews of good movies tend to spend an odd amount of time discussing why it didn't get a higher rating rather than why it got as high as it did. This is just personality, I guess.
First, I might be getting a little tired of Bill Murry's ultra-mellow acting of late, but it is undeniable that he is good at it. This film was funnier than I expected. Certainly an ultra-dry funny, but definitely funny. It would have gotten a 4.0 (from both of us) I think, if it had a little less ambiguity at the end. There is nothing wrong with intentional plot ambiguity, and indeed some of the best films revel in it. But at the end (we both) felt unnecessarily confused, I think. Nevertheless a quite good film. One odd note: the four or five places that the main character visits in the film all seem to be in the NJ-PA-NY area, and yet he takes a plane each time. Inefficient. Soundtrack is largely cool Ethiopian groovy music, displayed prominantly.
